  • Adaptive Beginner

    We do not focus on diagnoses or labels. We teach swimming to students of all ages who are not served successfully by traditional group lessons, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anxiety, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other sensory and physical/motor learning differences. Class sizes are for two. Purpose To begin developing positive attitudes, good swimming habits and safe practices in and around the water. Prerequisites: No skill prerequisites. This class is for students who are beginner swimmers. Learning Objectives Blow bubbles through mouth and nose Bobbing Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects Front and back glides and floats Recover to vertical positions Roll from front to back and back to front Tread water using arm and hand actions Alternating and simultaneous leg action on front and back
  • Adult Fitness - Deep Water Aqua Jog

    Maximize your results in this mixed training program. Aqua Jogging is an intense, but non-impact, exercise alternative that will challenge all levels of participants. Workout includes safe, effective lower body variations and specific arm movements. All activities are done in water 9-12 feet deep. A jogging belt is worn to hold the participant in a vertical position. Jogging belts are provided, but they are also available for purchase at the Roosevelt Community Pool Office prior to class starting. Please note the following restrictions: The participant may enter the pool facility five minutes prior to class. There will be no use of lockers in the locker rooms; only use of showers (to rinse off before and after class) and bathroom use. Participants are asked to bring their belongings in a bag on the pool deck. There is limited locker room changing available. You are encouraged to come in your swimsuit and leave in your swimsuit (depending upon weather). If the participant is not feeling well, PLEASE do not come to class. Our Adult Fitness Programs have two ways to attend: Register online for a season pass - good for specific dates and times. This guarantees you a spot and is available for a reduced rate. Purchase a punch card for a fee and come when it works for you. Punch cards will be available for purchase at the pool only. Please note, if we reach the class capacity drop-in will not be available. Drop in fee: $8.00 per class - all ages 10 punch card: $72.00 - expires one year from purchase
  • Adult Fitness - Lap Swimming

    Swim laps in designated lap swim lanes for fitness and conditioning. Participants are able and encouraged to share a lane. Please note the following restrictions: The participant may enter the pool facility five minutes prior to class. There will be no use of lockers in the locker rooms; only use of showers (to rinse off before class) and bathroom use. Participants are asked to bring their belongings in a bag on the pool deck. There is limited locker room changing available. You are encouraged to come in your swimsuit and leave in your swimsuit (depending upon weather).   • Competitive Swim Training

    This program is for participants in Middle School, High School, and college. The prerequisite for this program is: participants must be able to swim 50 continuous yards of freestyle and backstroke, 25 yards of breaststroke or passed Level 4. This program is coached by: Jamie Law - 32 years coaching high school swimming in MN: 8 athletes have earned All-American Honors 23 athletes have earned MN All-State Honors 7 athletes were MN State Meet Champions 10 individual and 1 relay MN State Meet Champions 3 athletes competed in Olympic trials Carole Weiland - Carole started swimming competitively when she was eight years old and continues to compete with Minnesota Masters Swimming. She currently holds three MN Master's records in the 200 yard breaststroke, the 800 meter freestyle, and the 4X2100 yard medley relay. She is also an active member of the triathlon community and has raced in every distance from sprints to Ironman and has competed in the United States Triathlon National's competitions. Carole has coached countless swimmers through club swimming, YMCA team swimming, and our summer maintenance program. Many of her swimmers have competed at the state level, college level, and national level. She also coached for Coon Rapids High School Girls Swim Team. The following guidelines will need to be followed in order to participate in the program: The participant may enter the pool facility five minutes prior to class. Please bring the following: water bottle, googles, kickboard*, and pull buoy*. If you do not have these*, they can be checked out to you for the program duration. Googles and swim caps are available for purchase. No partial or pro-rated fees for absences/ vacations/ etc.
  • Friday Morning Swim Camp

    Come join in the fun of swimming lessons, group games, and open swim. This is a drop-off program for ages 7-14 and is offered once per week. You can register for one or more sessions. All programs are led by staff certified in the American Red Cross in Water Safety Safety Instruction and a lifeguard is present at all times. The morning includes one hour of swim instruction, one hour of group games, and one hour of open swimming. Schedule 9:00-10:00 a.m. - Group Swimming Lesson - swimmers will be grouped into three categories - beginner, immediate, and advanced. Each group will be working on swimming skills appropriate for their level. 10:00-11:00 a.m. - Group Water Games 11:00-12:00 p.m. - Open Swim - swimmers must be able to complete our deep water swim test to be able to use the deep end and diving boards Swimmers are encouraged to bring a snack and a plastic water bottle.
  • Intro to Competitive Swim Camp

    This program is for participants who have completed level 5. The prerequisites for this program are: -knowledge of competitive strokes -ability to swim 50 yards (2 lengths to the pool) The afternoon will contain dryland skills, a workout in the water and then free time in the pool. Please bring a water bottle, snack, goggles.
  • Junior Lifeguarding

    Junior Lifeguarding is designed to introduce youth (ages 11-14) to the lifeguarding course by building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills for future lifeguards. Participants are not required to master or perfectly execute skills. Students will learn techniques and build stamina during this program. The Junior Lifeguarding course does not certify participants in first aid, CPR or AED or as a lifeguard. Junior Lifeguarding offers a transition from upper-level Learn-to-Swim courses to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program, challenging participants to stay involved with aquatics. Junior Lifeguarding will introduce participants to: a) the skills needed for entry to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. b) leadership, communication and decision-making skills. c) The basic responsibilities, knowledge, and skills of a lifeguard. COURSE PREREQUISITES Before entering Junior Lifeguarding, participants must demonstrate the following skills: 1. Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side. 2. Swim the breaststroke for 25 yards using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence. 3. Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs. 4. Show a level of comfort on the back by floating on the back for 30 seconds or swimming on the back for 25 yards using the elementary backstroke or back crawl. 5. Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet under water.
  • Open Swim Session

    OPEN SWIM All ages are welcome during our open swim hours! Open swim time allows the opportunity for young swimmers to practice their skills, or just play and have fun. An adult is required to be in the water with children under the age of 7 (within arms reach). Lap swim and water walking in the lanes will also be available during this time as space allows. Open swim includes: Shallow end use for all swimmers Deep end swimming for all swimmers who complete a swim test. Diving board usage - one diving board will be open for diving and forward jumping. Shallow end basketball hoop and balls Rings, noodles, etc. Please note: goggles which over the nose (face mask style) and inflatables are not permitted. If you have a punch card, we will accept these if we have available space. They must be presented at the time of check-in. One punch for each person swimming will be deducted from the punch card. Pre-registration is encouraged, but we will accept drop-ins (depending upon capacity). Please note: refunds are only available on cancellations five days in advance and incur a $1.00 processing fee per transaction.
  • Snorkeling Camp

    Snorkeling is a great way to explore the underwater world. Maybe scuba diving just isn't your thing, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the beauty of a tropical reef when you are on vacation or a local lake when you are closer to home. Our Snorkeling camp will get you ready for some exciting adventures. Join us in the pool for your Introduction to Snorkeling course. We will do some work outside of the pool in classroom type setting, get in the pool and learn fundamentals and then enjoy some free time in the water. What Qualifications Do I Need to Start? You must be at least 8 years old Have basic swimming skills How Does It Work? You can sign up for one of our upcoming Introduction to Snorkeling camps online. Then head for the pool with your snorkeling equipment or you can use our equipment (minimum equipment is snorkel, mask, and fins). We will start in the water where you will learn about all the fundamentals of safe and enjoyable. What Will I Need? You will need to have your own mask, snorkel, and fins as a minimum. Remember, fit and comfort are critical to your enjoyment. Make sure you have the proper equipment.
  • Summer - Beginning Diving

    Come learn the basics of diving. This small group environment will allow individuals to work at their own pace. This class is for individuals ages 6-13. All participants must be able to swim in deep water and be a strong swimmer. Your swimmer should pass level 1.
  • Summer - Parent/Child Swim Lessons - Ages 6 mo-3 years

    Please note the following: Please check in at the pool window. You will be able to use the locker room and showers are required before entering the water. There is limited locker room changing available. You are encouraged to come in your swimsuit and leave in your swimsuit (depending upon weather). If any of the participants are not feeling well, PLEASE do not come to class. Any child not potty trained, must wear a swim diaper in the pool. Swim diapers are available for purchase before class starts. Purpose To familiarize young children (from ages 6 months to about 3 years) to the water and prepare them to learn to swim in the American Red Cross Preschool Aquatics or Learn-to-Swim courses. It is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or to survive in the water on their own. Prerequisites No skill prerequisites. Child must be at least 6 months old to enroll. Parent or other caregiver must accompany each child into the water and participate in each class. It can be a different person each time. Learning Objectives (Parent and Child Level 1 and 2 Combined): Learn to ask for permission before entering the water. Learn to expect adult supervision when near water. Learn how to enter and exit the water in a safe manner. Feel comfortable in the water. Explore submerging to the mouth, nose and eyes completely. Explore submerging in a rhythmic pattern completely. Explore buoyancy on the front and back position. Glide on the front and back with assistance. Perform combined stroke on front and back with assistance. Change body position in the water with support. Learn basic water safety rules and how to avoid water hazards around the home. Learn about the importance of wearing a life jacket and experience wearing one. Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including knowing how to stay safe in the sun and how to avoid recreational water illnesses. Learn to look carefully before entering the water. Learn how to call for help and the importance of knowing first aid and CPR. Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation.
  • Summer - Preschool 1 - Ages 3-4

    Purpose: To orient preschool-age children to the aquatic environment and to help them acquire rudimentary levels of basic aquatic skills. Children attend class independently. Prerequisites: Preschool Level 1: No skill prerequisites. Learning Objectives: Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side. Blow bubbles through mouth and nose. Submerge mouth, nose and eyes. Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects. Front and back glides and recover to a vertical position. Back float and recover to a vertical position. Roll from front to back and back to front. Tread with arm and hand actions. Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back. Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back. Experience wearing a life jacket in the water. Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing and emergency and knowing how to call for help. Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety. Certification Requirements: Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills. Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment (can be done with support): Enter independently, using either the ladder, steps or side, travel at least 5 yards, submerge to mouth and blow bubbles for at least 3 seconds then safely exit the water. (Children can walk, move along the gutter or "swim.") While in shallow water, glide on front at least 2 body lengths, then roll to back and float on back for 3 seconds then recover to a vertical position.
  • Summer - Preschool 2 - Ages 3-4

    Purpose: To build on the basic aquatic skills learned in Preschool 1 Prerequisites: Successfully demonstrate the exit skills assessments from Preschool Aquatics Level 1 Learning Objectives ƒ Enter water by stepping in ƒ Exit water using ladder, steps or side ƒ Bobbing ƒ Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects ƒ Front and back floats and glides ƒ Recover from a front or back float or glide to a vertical position ƒ Roll from front to back and back to front ƒ Tread water using arm and leg actions ƒ Combined arm and leg actions on front and back or back ƒ Finning arm action on back ƒ Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency and knowing how to call for help ƒ Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety. Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills ƒ Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment (can be done with assistance): 1. Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to back, float on back for 5 seconds then recover to a vertical position. 2. Glide on back for at least 2 body lengths, roll to front, float for 5 seconds then recover to a vertical position. 3. Swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 3 body lengths, roll to back, float for 5 seconds, roll to front then continue swimming on front for 3 body lengths.
  • Summer - Preschool 3 - Ages 3 & 4

    Purpose: To increase proficiency and build on the basic aquatic skills learned in preschool levels 1 and 2 by providing additional guided practice with increased distances and times Prerequisites Successfully demonstrate the exit skills assessments of Preschool Aquatics Level 2 Learning Objectives ƒ Enter water by jumping in ƒ Fully submerge and hold breath ƒ Bobbing ƒ Front, jellyfish and tuck floats ƒ Recover from a front or back float or glide to a vertical position ƒ Back float and glide ƒ Change direction of travel while swimming on front and back ƒ Combined arm and leg actions on front and back ƒ Tread water using arm and leg actions ƒ Combined arm and leg actions on front and back ƒ Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency and knowing how to call for help ƒ Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety. Certification Requirements ƒ Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills ƒ Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment: 1. Step from side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll to back, float for 5 seconds then return to a vertical position. 2. Move into a back float for 5 seconds, roll to front then recover to a vertical position. 3. Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths.

    Our private lessons can help swimmers looking to build comfort and basic water skills with an instructor. These lessons provide a supportive setting to help learn swim basics or provide extra attention on strokes and level progression. Private lessons are for people of all ages and abilities. Private lessons are for one student.

(This part of the assessment can be performed with support.)

    Purpose To build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice in deeper water Prerequisites Successful demonstrate of all certification requirements from Level 2 Learning Objectives Enter water by jumping from the side Headfirst entries from the side in sitting and kneeling positions Bobbing while moving toward safety Rotary breathing Survival float Back float Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back Tread water Flutter, scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front Front crawl and elementary backstroke Learn to look carefully before entering the water Learn to perform simple non-swimming assists Learn to recognize, prevent and respond to cold water emergencies Certification Requirements Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment: Jump into deep water from the side, swim front crawl for 15 yards, maintain position by treading or floating for 30 seconds and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards.

    Purpose: To develop participants' confidence in the strokes learned in Level 3 and to improve other aquatic skills. Prerequisites: Successful demonstration of all completion requirements from Level 3 Learning Objectives: Headfirst entries from the side in compact and stride positions Swim under water Feet first surface dive Survival swimming Front crawl and backstroke open turns Tread water using 2 different kicks Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly Flutter and dolphin kicks on back Learn to look carefully before entering the water Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation Learn to perform simple non-swimming assists Learn about recreational water illnesses and how to prevent them Certification Requirements: Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment: Perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards.

    Purpose: To further learn how to coordinate and refine strokes. Prerequisites: Successful demonstration of all completion requirements from Level 4 Learning Objectives: Shallow-angle dive from the side then glide and begin a front stroke Tuck and pike surface dives, submerge completely Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn while swimming Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly Sculling Learn to look carefully before entering the water Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation Learn to perform simple non-swimming assists Learn about recreational water illnesses and how to prevent them Learn how to call for help and he importance of knowing first aid and CPR Learn basic safety guidelines for participating in aquatic activities at water parks Certification Requirements: Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment: Perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards. Swim breaststroke for 25 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim back crawl for 25 yards.

    Swimming and Skill Proficiency Objective: Refine strokes so students swim them with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances Requirements: Students entering this level must possess a Level 5 certificate or demonstrate all the Level 5 skills Skills Covered: 500 yards continuous swim using 100 yards each of front & back crawl, 50 yards each of breastroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke & butterfly and 100 yards choice of any of those strokes, survival floating and back floating 5 minutes each, feet first surface dive & retrieve an object from 7 feet, Cooper 12-minute swim test
  • Summer- Youth Level 2 - Ages 5+

    Purpose To give participants success with fundamental skills, including learning how to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. Prerequisites Valid American Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills OR Successful demonstration of all certification requirements from Level 1 Learning Objectives Enter and exit water by stepping or jumping from the side Fully submerge and hold breath Bobbing Open eyes underwater and retrieve submerged objects Front, jellyfish and tuck floats Recover to a vertical position Roll from front to back and back to front Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back Tread water using arm and leg actions Combined arm and leg actions on front and back Finning arm action Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency, knowing how to call for help and perform simple non-swimming assists Learn how to stay safe in, on and around water, including the use of life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety Learn to look carefully before entering the water Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation
  • Wilderness First Aid Camp

    Wilderness and Remote First Aid Camp Come join us for a fun afternoon learn about staying safe in remote areas. Most of the day is spent with first aid topics and practicing first aid skills. Each afternoon the group will participate an in hour of open swim. Topics include: Primary and Secondary Assessments Head/Brain, Neck and Spinal Injuries Heat-Related Emergencies Hypothermia Altitude-Related Illnesses Allergies and Anaphylaxis Burns Bone and Joint Injuries Wounds and Wound Infection
