    We do not focus on diagnoses or labels. We teach swimming to students of all ages who are not served successfully by traditional group lessons, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anxiety, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other sensory and physical/motor learning differences. Class sizes are for two. Purpose To begin developing positive attitudes, good swimming habits and safe practices in and around the water. Prerequisites: No skill prerequisites. This class is for students who are beginner swimmers.   • Adult Fitness - Deep Water Aqua Jog

    Maximize your results in this mixed training program. Aqua Jogging is an intense, but non-impact, exercise alternative that will challenge all levels of participants. Workout includes safe, effective lower body variations and specific arm movements. All activities are done in water 9-12 feet deep. A jogging belt is worn to hold the participant in a vertical position. Jogging belts are provided, but they are also available for purchase at the Roosevelt Community Pool Office prior to class starting. Please note the following restrictions: The participant may enter the pool facility five minutes prior to class. There will be no use of lockers in the locker rooms; only use of showers (to rinse off before and after class) and bathroom use. Participants are asked to bring their belongings in a bag on the pool deck. There is limited locker room changing available. You are encouraged to come in your swimsuit and leave in your swimsuit (depending upon weather). If the participant is not feeling well, PLEASE do not come to class. Our Adult Fitness Programs have two ways to attend: Register online for a season pass - good for specific dates and times. This guarantees you a spot and is available for a reduced rate. Purchase a punch card for a fee and come when it works for you. Punch cards will be available for purchase at the pool only. Please note, if we reach the class capacity drop-in will not be available. Drop in fee: $8.00 per class - all ages 10 punch card: $72.00 - expires one year from purchase

    Swim laps in designated lap swim lanes for fitness and conditioning. Participants are able and encouraged to share a lane.   • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training

    Interested in a great part-time job or challenging career as a professional lifeguard? Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. This class is a blended learning course, with some in-person and some online work. All in-person sessions must be attended to obtain certification. Must be 15 years old by the final day of class Blended Learning course format 19 hours, 30 minutes in-person/7 hours 30 minutes online (27 hours) You must pass a pre-course skills assessment the first class in order to continue the class. The skills assessment is the following: 1) Be able to swim 300 Yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swim goggles may be used. 2) Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. 3) Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: a) Starting in the water, swim 20 Yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are NOT allowed. b) Surface dive, feet first or head first, to a depth of 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10 pound object. c) Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. The above skill test will be administered as the first thing in the course. Please be prepared. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED which is valid for 2 years.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor

    American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) - Ages 16+ Become certified to teach American Red Cross swim lessons. Upon completion, attendees will be able to teach all the skills for American Red Cross swimming levels, organize lesson plans in a progressive manner, fill out student skill sheets, and give corrective and positive feedback. Attendance is required for ALL classes. Coursework for the blended learning portion MUST be completed prior to the first day of class (this will be provided via online link). Prerequisites: On the first day of class, you must be prepared to: - Produce a driver's license or birth certificate showing you are at least 16 years old by the last day of class. - Demonstrate swimming skills equivalent to the American Red Cross Level 4 requirements. - Complete the online pre-course work for the Water Safety Instructor course.
  • Competitive Swim Training

    This program is for participants in Middle School, High School, and college. The prerequisite for this program is: participants must be able to swim 50 continuous yards of freestyle and backstroke, 25 yards of breaststroke or passed Level 4. This program is coached by: Jamie Law - 32 years coaching high school swimming in MN: 8 athletes have earned All-American Honors 23 athletes have earned MN All-State Honors 7 athletes were MN State Meet Champions 10 individual and 1 relay MN State Meet Champions 3 athletes competed in Olympic trials Carole Weiland - Carole started swimming competitively when she was eight years old and continues to compete with Minnesota Masters Swimming. She currently holds three MN Master's records in the 200 yard breaststroke, the 800 meter freestyle, and the 4X2100 yard medley relay. She is also an active member of the triathlon community and has raced in every distance from sprints to Ironman and has competed in the United States Triathlon National's competitions. Carole has coached countless swimmers through club swimming, YMCA team swimming, and our summer maintenance program. Many of her swimmers have competed at the state level, college level, and national level. She also coached for Coon Rapids High School Girls Swim Team. The following guidelines will need to be followed in order to participate in the program: The participant may enter the pool facility five minutes prior to class. Please bring the following: water bottle, googles, kickboard*, and pull buoy*. If you do not have these*, they can be checked out to you for the program duration. Googles and swim caps are available for purchase. No partial or pro-rated fees for absences/ vacations/ etc.
  • Friday Morning Swim Camp

    Come join in the fun of swimming lessons, group games, and open swim. This is a drop-off program for ages 7-14 and is offered once per week. You can register for one or more sessions. All programs are led by staff certified in the American Red Cross in Water Safety Safety Instruction and a lifeguard is present at all times. The morning includes one hour of swim instruction, one hour of group games, and one hour of open swimming. Schedule 9:00-10:00 a.m. - Group Swimming Lesson - swimmers will be grouped into three categories - beginner, immediate, and advanced. Each group will be working on swimming skills appropriate for their level. 10:00-11:00 a.m. - Group Water Games 11:00-12:00 p.m. - Open Swim - swimmers must be able to complete our deep water swim test to be able to use the deep end and diving boards Swimmers are encouraged to bring a snack and a plastic water bottle.
  • Junior Lifeguarding

    Junior Lifeguarding is designed to introduce youth (ages 11-14) to the lifeguarding course by building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills for future lifeguards. Participants are not required to master or perfectly execute skills. Students will learn techniques and build stamina during this program. The Junior Lifeguarding course does not certify participants in first aid, CPR or AED or as a lifeguard. Junior Lifeguarding offers a transition from upper-level Learn-to-Swim courses to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program, challenging participants to stay involved with aquatics. Junior Lifeguarding will introduce participants to: a) the skills needed for entry to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. b) leadership, communication and decision-making skills. c) The basic responsibilities, knowledge, and skills of a lifeguard. COURSE PREREQUISITES Before entering Junior Lifeguarding, participants must demonstrate the following skills: 1. Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side. 2. Swim the breaststroke for 25 yards using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence. 3. Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs. 4. Show a level of comfort on the back by floating on the back for 30 seconds or swimming on the back for 25 yards using the elementary backstroke or back crawl. 5. Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet under water.
  • Open Swim Session

    OPEN SWIM All ages are welcome during our open swim hours! Open swim time allows the opportunity for young swimmers to practice their skills, or just play and have fun. An adult is required to be in the water with children under the age of 7 (within arms reach). Lap swim and water walking in the lanes will also be available during this time as space allows. Open swim includes: Shallow end use for all swimmers Deep end swimming for all swimmers who complete a swim test. Diving board usage - one diving board will be open for diving and forward jumping. Shallow end basketball hoop and balls Rings, noodles, etc. Please note: goggles which over the nose (face mask style) and inflatables are not permitted. If you have a punch card, we will accept these if we have available space. They must be presented at the time of check-in. One punch for each person swimming will be deducted from the punch card. Pre-registration is encouraged, but we will accept drop-ins (depending upon capacity). Please note: refunds are only available on cancellations five days in advance and incur a $1.00 processing fee per transaction.
  • Sensory Friendly Open Swim Session

    Sensory Friendly OPEN SWIM We are excited to offer a once-a-month, special swimming session in which we modify the environment to create a calmer atmosphere in the pool, creating a more sensory-friendly environment to those with autism and other special needs. The music will be turned off; whistles will not be used within the vicinity of the pool and staff will be trained to understand the special needs of children and families. The space will be welcome to everyone at the time, just with some minor adjustments to make it a safe and calm place for everyone to enjoy. All ages are welcome during our open swim hours!   • Snorkeling Camp

    Snorkeling is a great way to explore the underwater world. Maybe scuba diving just isn't your thing, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the beauty of a tropical reef when you are on vacation or a local lake when you are closer to home. Our Snorkeling camp will get you ready for some exciting adventures. Join us in the pool for your Introduction to Snorkeling course. We will do some work outside of the pool in classroom type setting, get in the pool and learn fundamentals and then enjoy some free time in the water. What Qualifications Do I Need to Start? You must be at least 8 years old Have basic swimming skills How Does It Work? You can sign up for one of our upcoming Introduction to Snorkeling camps online. Then head for the pool with your snorkeling equipment or you can use our equipment (minimum equipment is snorkel, mask, and fins). We will start in the water where you will learn about all the fundamentals of safe and enjoyable. What Will I Need? You will need to have your own mask, snorkel, and fins as a minimum. Remember, fit and comfort are critical to your enjoyment. Make sure you have the proper equipment.

    Come learn the basics of diving. This small group environment will allow individuals to work at their own pace. This class is for individuals ages 6-13. All participants must be able to swim in deep water and be a strong swimmer. Your swimmer should pass Level 3.

  • Summer - Parent/Child Swim Lessons - Ages 6 mo-3 years

    Please note the following: Please check in at the pool window. You will be able to use the locker room and showers are required before entering the water. There is limited locker room changing available. You are encouraged to come in your swimsuit and leave in your swimsuit (depending upon weather). If any of the participants are not feeling well, PLEASE do not come to class. Any child not potty trained is required to wear a swim diaper in the pool. Swim diapers are available for purchase before class starts. Purpose: To familiarize young children (from ages 6 months to about 3 years) to the water and prepare them to learn to swim in the American Red Cross Preschool Aquatics or Learn-to-Swim courses. It is NOT designed to teach children to become independent swimmers or to survive in the water on their own. Prerequisites: No skill prerequisites. Child must be at least 6 months old to enroll. Parent, guardian or other caregiver must accompany each child into the water and participate in each class. It can be a different person each time. Learning Objectives (Parent and Child Level 1 and 2 Combined): Learn to ask for permission before entering the water. Learn to expect adult supervision when near water. Learn how to enter and exit the water in a safe manner. Feel comfortable in the water. Explore submerging to the mouth, nose and eyes completely. Explore submerging in a rhythmic pattern completely. Explore buoyancy on the front and back position. Glide on the front and back with assistance. Perform combined stroke on front and back with assistance. Change body position in the water with support. Learn basic water safety rules and how to avoid water hazards around the home. Learn about the importance of wearing a life jacket and experience wearing one. Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including knowing how to stay safe in the sun and how to avoid recreational water illnesses. Learn to look carefully before entering the water. Learn how to call for help and the importance of knowing first aid and CPR. Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation.
  • Summer - Preschool 1 - Ages 3-4

    Purpose: To orient preschool-age children to the aquatic environment and to help them acquire rudimentary levels of basic aquatic skills. Children attend class independently. Prerequisites: Preschool Level 1: No skill prerequisites. Learning Objectives: Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side. Blow bubbles through mouth and nose. Submerge mouth, nose and eyes. Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects. Front and back glides and recover to a vertical position. Back float and recover to a vertical position. Roll from front to back and back to front. Tread with arm and hand actions. Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back. Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back. Experience wearing a life jacket in the water. Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing and emergency and knowing how to call for help. Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety. Certification Requirements: Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills. Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment (can be done with support): Enter independently, using either the ladder, steps or side, travel at least 5 yards, submerge to mouth and blow bubbles for at least 3 seconds then safely exit the water. (Children can walk, move along the gutter or "swim.") While in shallow water, glide on front at least 2 body lengths, then roll to back and float on back for 3 seconds then recover to a vertical position.

  • Summer - Youth Level 2 - Ages 5+

    Purpose To give participants success with fundamental skills, including learning how to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. Prerequisites Valid American Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills OR Successful demonstration of all certification requirements from Level 1 Learning Objectives Enter and exit water by stepping or jumping from the side Fully submerge and hold breath Bobbing Open eyes underwater and retrieve submerged objects Front, jellyfish and tuck floats Front and back glides (2 body lengths) Recover to a vertical position Roll from front to back and back to front Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back Tread water using arm and leg actions (15 seconds) Combined arm and leg actions on front and back (5 body lengths) Finning arm action (5 body lengths) Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency, knowing how to call for help and perform simple non-swimming assists Learn how to stay safe in, on and around water, including the use of life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety Learn to look carefully before entering the water Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation Certification Requirements Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment: Step from side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll to back for 5 second float then return to vertical position.     Purpose To build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice in deeper water. Also, learning the fundamentals for swimming strokes. Prerequisites Valid American Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 2 OR Successful demonstrate of all certification requirements from Level 2 Learning Objectives Enter water by jumping from the side Headfirst entries from the side in sitting and kneeling positions Bobbing while moving toward safety Rotary breathing Survival float (30 seconds) Back float (30 seconds) Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back Tread water (30 seconds) Flutter, scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front Front crawl and elementary backstroke (15 yards) Learn to look carefully before entering the water Learn to perform simple non-swimming assists Learn to recognize, prevent and respond to cold water emergencies Certification Requirements Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment: Jump into deep water from the side, swim front crawl for 15 yards, maintain position by treading or floating for 30 seconds and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards.

    Purpose: To develop participants' confidence in the strokes learned in Level 3 and to improve other aquatic skills. Prerequisites: Valid American Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 3 OR Successful demonstration of all completion requirements from Level 3 Learning Objectives: Headfirst entries from the side in compact and stride positions Swim under water (3-5 body lengths) Feet first surface dive, submerging completely Survival swimming (30 seconds) Front crawl and backstroke open turns Tread water using 2 different kicks (2 minutes) Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly Push off in a streamlined position and begin flutter and dolphin kicking on back and front (3-5 body lengths) Learn to look carefully before entering the water Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation Learn to perform simple non-swimming assists Learn about recreational water illnesses and how to prevent them Certification Requirements: Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment: Perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards.

    Purpose: To further learn how to coordinate and refine strokes. Prerequisites: Valid American Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 4 OR Successful demonstration of all completion requirements from Level 4 Learning Objectives: Shallow-angle dive from the side then glide and begin a front stroke Tuck and pike surface dives, submerging completely Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn while swimming Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly Sculling (30 seconds) Treading water (5 minutes) Learn to look carefully before entering the water Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation Learn to perform simple non-swimming assists Learn about recreational water illnesses and how to prevent them Learn how to call for help and the importance of knowing first aid and CPR Learn basic safety guidelines for participating in aquatic activities at water parks Certification Requirements: Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment: Perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards. Swim breaststroke for 25 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim back crawl for 25 yards.
