All aspects of our society are affected by climate change, scarce resources, pandemics, and the need for new solutions to these challenges. While some of the answers to these and other issues will come from new ways of thinking and acting interpersonally, many of the answers will be found in new scientific discoveries and applications. The basis for many of the answers to these questions will be in new materials and new forms of old materials. Today we will focus on the building blocks of solids and the interesting ways that they can be manipulated. I will be talking about dust and why it is not a nuisance, but the very answer to many of our current needs.
Solids (dust) processing and handling is a common theme in food processing, drug delivery systems, novel battery construction, plastics and polymers, imaging systems and, perhaps, every aspect of our daily life that involves contact with the world around us. The formation of solid products from toys to cars to the foods we eat and the movies we watch are accomplished with the use of small particles (dust) in almost every case. We will start out this talk with definitions of solids and solids handling providing examples and answers to everyday materials and products. We will be talking about solids or particles in sandcastles, cookie dough, cans of mixed nuts, shoe polish, Kindle e-Books, the production of iron metal from iron oxide, batteries for electric storage and COVID 19 vaccinations. With each example the materials (particles/dust) will be described and some of the solids handling science will be discussed. In each case the audience will be asked to help explain the observations with scientific explanations.
By the end of the presentation the audience will see that particles, dust, is not a nuisance and can be a critical part of our everyday life with the opportunity to help solve many of today’s challenges.
