  • Anoka Aquatic Center

    Make a splash at the Anoka Aquatic Center. Enjoy the water slides, adventure walk, water sprays, fountains and plenty of room to swim. Coast Guard approved life jackets are permitted in the zero-depth entry swimming area with staff present in the water. Bring a swimsuit, towel and sunscreen. Concessions available for purchase (optional). Escorts: Chris and Pam Eligible UCare members may receive up to a $15 discount on many Community Education classes when registering over the phone.   • Preschool (ages 3-4)

    Purpose To orient preschool-age children to the aquatic environment and to help them acquire rudimentary levels of basic aquatic skills Prerequisites No skill prerequisites for Preschool Level 1, if you are registering for Preschool 2 or 3, please review the skills in the previous level to see if they are eligible for enrollment Child must be at least 3 years old to enroll Refunds or make-up classes are not available for any missed classes. Any class cancellations must be made five business days in advance and will incur a $10 processing fee.
  • Summer - Preschool 2 - Ages 3-4

    Purpose: To build on the basic aquatic skills learned in Preschool 1 Prerequisites: Successfully demonstrate the exit skills assessments from Preschool Aquatics Level 1 Learning Objectives ƒ Enter water by stepping in ƒ Exit water using ladder, steps or side ƒ Bobbing ƒ Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects ƒ Front and back floats and glides ƒ Recover from a front or back float or glide to a vertical position ƒ Roll from front to back and back to front ƒ Tread water using arm and leg actions ƒ Combined arm and leg actions on front and back or back ƒ Finning arm action on back ƒ Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency and knowing how to call for help ƒ Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety. Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills ƒ Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment (can be done with assistance): 1. Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to back, float on back for 5 seconds then recover to a vertical position. 2. Glide on back for at least 2 body lengths, roll to front, float for 5 seconds then recover to a vertical position. 3. Swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 3 body lengths, roll to back, float for 5 seconds, roll to front then continue swimming on front for 3 body lengths.
  • Summer - Preschool 3 - Ages 3 & 4

    Purpose: To increase proficiency and build on the basic aquatic skills learned in preschool levels 1 and 2 by providing additional guided practice with increased distances and times Prerequisites Successfully demonstrate the exit skills assessments of Preschool Aquatics Level 2 Learning Objectives ƒ Enter water by jumping in ƒ Fully submerge and hold breath ƒ Bobbing ƒ Front, jellyfish and tuck floats ƒ Recover from a front or back float or glide to a vertical position ƒ Back float and glide ƒ Change direction of travel while swimming on front and back ƒ Combined arm and leg actions on front and back ƒ Tread water using arm and leg actions ƒ Combined arm and leg actions on front and back ƒ Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency and knowing how to call for help ƒ Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety. Certification Requirements ƒ Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills ƒ Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment: 1. Step from side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll to back, float for 5 seconds then return to a vertical position. 2. Move into a back float for 5 seconds, roll to front then recover to a vertical position. 3. Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths.
  • Summer - Preschool 1 - Ages 3-4

    Purpose: To orient preschool-age children to the aquatic environment and to help them acquire rudimentary levels of basic aquatic skills. Children attend class independently. Prerequisites: Preschool Level 1: No skill prerequisites. Learning Objectives: Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side. Blow bubbles through mouth and nose. Submerge mouth, nose and eyes. Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects. Front and back glides and recover to a vertical position. Back float and recover to a vertical position. Roll from front to back and back to front. Tread with arm and hand actions. Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back. Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back. Experience wearing a life jacket in the water. Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing and emergency and knowing how to call for help. Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety. Certification Requirements: Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills. Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment (can be done with support): Enter independently, using either the ladder, steps or side, travel at least 5 yards, submerge to mouth and blow bubbles for at least 3 seconds then safely exit the water. (Children can walk, move along the gutter or "swim.") While in shallow water, glide on front at least 2 body lengths, then roll to back and float on back for 3 seconds then recover to a vertical position.
  • Youth Activities and Classes

    Each elementary and middle school in the Anoka-Hennepin School District has a Community Schools office which coordinates a wide variety of courses, clubs, camps and clinics to enhance your child's academic and social experiences while away from school. Families are welcome to enroll in enrichment opportunities offered at their child's school or at any school, districtwide. Activities are offered after-school, in the evening and on the weekend. The Community Schools program is dedicated to student success by providing quality programs year-round in safe, accessible environments to enhance the positive growth of youth. Programs are available for children ages three to 18 years of age, including: Arts and crafts Athletics, sports and recreation Aquatics, swimming lessons and open swim Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) Language, culture and performing arts Field trips
  • Summer - Youth Level 4 - Ages 5+

    Purpose: To develop participants' confidence in the strokes learned in Level 3 and to improve other aquatic skills. Prerequisites: Successful demonstration of all completion requirements from Level 3 Learning Objectives: Headfirst entries from the side in compact and stride positions Swim under water Feet first surface dive Survival swimming Front crawl and backstroke open turns Tread water using 2 different kicks Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly Flutter and dolphin kicks on back Learn to look carefully before entering the water Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation Learn to perform simple non-swimming assists Learn about recreational water illnesses and how to prevent them Certification Requirements: Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment: Perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards.

    Purpose: To further learn how to coordinate and refine strokes. Prerequisites: Successful demonstration of all completion requirements from Level 4 Learning Objectives: Shallow-angle dive from the side then glide and begin a front stroke Tuck and pike surface dives, submerge completely Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn while swimming Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly Sculling Learn to look carefully before entering the water Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation Learn to perform simple non-swimming assists Learn about recreational water illnesses and how to prevent them Learn how to call for help and he importance of knowing first aid and CPR Learn basic safety guidelines for participating in aquatic activities at water parks Certification Requirements: Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills Successfully complete the following exit skills assessment: Perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards. Swim breaststroke for 25 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim back crawl for 25 yards.

    Anoka-Hennepin Community Education offers learning and enrichment opportunities in the water for adults. Whether you want to learn to swim, improve your stroke technique or burn a few calories, Roosevelt Community Pool provides a variety of lessons, activities and classes for adults to enjoy. Adult aquatic exercise: Take advantage of the unique benefits of water exercise. Adult swimming lessons: Learn to swim - no matter what your age or skill level. Adult Lap Swimming & Water Walking: Keep up a fitness regime. Please note, Anoka-Hennepin Community Education's registration policy is the following: any class cancellations must be done five business days before the class begins and there is a $10 processing fee. If the Anoka-Hennepin School District closes for snow or a cold day, all community education programming is closed for that day too. We will post it on our Facebook page or if you are registered, see below. For those who register for a session (not drop-in): If we have a class cancellation for any reason (snow day, instructor ill, etc.) you will receive a refund for the missing day. You can opt into text messages, which will alert you to a last-minute cancellation. You will only receive a text message for this scenario, we do not text anything else.
  • Junior Lifeguarding

    Junior Lifeguarding is designed to introduce youth (ages 11-14) to the lifeguarding course by building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills for future lifeguards. Participants are not required to master or perfectly execute skills. Students will learn techniques and build stamina during this program. The Junior Lifeguarding course does not certify participants in first aid, CPR or AED or as a lifeguard. Junior Lifeguarding offers a transition from upper-level Learn-to-Swim courses to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program, challenging participants to stay involved with aquatics. Junior Lifeguarding will introduce participants to: a) the skills needed for entry to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. b) leadership, communication and decision-making skills. c) The basic responsibilities, knowledge, and skills of a lifeguard. COURSE PREREQUISITES Before entering Junior Lifeguarding, participants must demonstrate the following skills: 1. Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side. 2. Swim the breaststroke for 25 yards using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence. 3. Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs. 4. Show a level of comfort on the back by floating on the back for 30 seconds or swimming on the back for 25 yards using the elementary backstroke or back crawl. 5. Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet under water.
  • Parent/Child (6-35 mo)

    Purpose To familiarize young children (from ages 6 months to 3 years) to the water and prepare them to learn to swim in the American Red Cross Preschool Aquatics or Learn-to-Swim courses. It is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or to survive in the water on their own. Prerequisites No skill prerequisites Child must be at least 6 months old to enroll Parent or other caregiver must accompany each child into the water and participate in each class Learning Objectives (Parent and Child Level 1 and 2 Combined): Learn to ask for permission before entering the water. Learn to expect adult supervision when near water. Learn how to enter and exit the water in a safe manner. Feel comfortable in the water. Explore submerging to the mouth, nose and eyes completely. Explore submerging in a rhythmic pattern completely. Explore buoyancy on the front and back position. Glide on the front and back with assistance. Perform combined stroke on front and back with assistance. Change body position in the water with support. Learn basic water safety rules and how to avoid water hazards around the home. Learn about the importance of wearing a life jacket and experience wearing one. Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including knowing how to stay safe in the sun and how to avoid recreational water illnesses. Learn to look carefully before entering the water. Learn how to call for help and the importance of knowing first aid and CPR. Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation.   • Summer - Parent/Child Swim Lessons - Ages 6 mo-3 years

    Please note the following: Please check in at the pool window. You will be able to use the locker room and showers are required before entering the water. There is limited locker room changing available. You are encouraged to come in your swimsuit and leave in your swimsuit (depending upon weather). If any of the participants are not feeling well, PLEASE do not come to class. Any child not potty trained, must wear a swim diaper in the pool. Swim diapers are available for purchase before class starts.
